”But there is a massive difference between spice and marijuana,” D’Souza said. The compounds found in spice can be anywhere between 10 and 200 times more potent than THC, the main psychoactive ingredient in marijuana, and they can produce more robust effects, he said. This led to the creation of newer versions of K2 that are even more harmful than early versions, Scalzo said. The newest products on the street can cause low blood pressure and a slow heart rate, and may even result in coma, seizures and kidney damage, he said.
What Is Xylazine, the Drug That’s ’Turning People Into Zombies’ in US?
They also forecast that the prevalence of xylazine will increase in the fentanyl supply, but will also increase in usage on its own, as it did in Puerto Rico. ”Tranq is basically zombifying people’s bodies,” Sam, aged 28, told Sky News. ”Until nine months ago, I never had wounds. Now, there are holes in my legs and feet.” As with any emerging health crisis, experts emphasized the picture is still forming and more research is needed. Some patients have also described xylazine withdrawal syndrome, which researchers are still trying to parse. “We’re still looking to characterize that and see how it might need to be treated differently than fentanyl,” says Perrone.
Warning a child could die due to drugs in vapes
The results, which appear in the journal Nature, suggest that psychedelic drugs work by disrupting certain brain networks, especially one that helps people form a sense of space, time and self. Earlier this month, the San Francisco Department of Health announced that low levels of xylazine were found in the systems of four people who overdosed, suggesting that the substance can be hidden in drugs unbeknownst to the users. The worrying “tranq” trend comes as the New York City Department of Health reported that 2,668 New Yorkers died of overdoses in 2021. The substance, which seemed to first appear in Philadelphia before migrating west to San Francisco and Los Angeles, was used for cutting heroin, but, most recently, it has been discovered in fentanyl and other illicit drugs. In the U.S. there was a major health scare last year after an Arizona man was hospitalized.
- In February, Philadelphia’s substance use prevention and harm reduction chief, Dr Andrew Best, warned that cities across America should brace for xylazine and called on the federal government to do more.
- The community, which neighbors describe as a “quiet” one, sits about 53 miles from the shooting site and is home to about 33,000 people.
- The precursor products come from China and are mostly converted to tablet or powder form by cartels in Mexico as Sky News exposed earlier this year.

In the 12 months ending in January, 109,000 Americans died from a drug overdose. Nearly seven in ten of those deaths were attributed to synthetic opioids like fentanyl and a growing number were linked to xylazine. Overuse of the drug can lead to rotting skin ulcerations and ultimately limb amputations if untreated, hence its horrifying nickname ”zombie drug”. Xylazine, also known as ”tranq”, ”tranq dope”, or the ”zombie drug”, has seen increasing usage across major U.S. cities, notably San Francisco, New York, Philadelphia and Los Angeles. According to one study published in the Journal of Analytical Toxicology in June 2022, xylazine has been detected in drug supply across 36 states and the District of Columbia.
Krokodil is a public health emergency in Russia; authorities say there are about 100,000 people addicted to the drug. But it is hard to accurately diagnose someone who also abuses heroin because of the similar symptoms. Like synthetic marijuana in New York City, flakka emerged in public consciousness in 2015 after a viral video on YouTube, titled ”Flocka [sic] is Destroying USA”, depicted a young woman dancing in the rain. Since then, other videos showing people with erratic behaviour were soon attributed to the drug. The TPCN explains that the active chemical can cause ”excited delirium”, which results in hyperstimulation, paranoia, and hallucinations that can lead to ”violent aggression”. Given the availability and widespread distribution of the drug, however, if it turned users into cannibals, there would be more reports of such instances publicly available.
What Is Synthetic Marijuana?
New figures show a shocking rise in deaths on US streets linked to a drug which rots the skin of those who use it. Xylazine itself is a central nervous system sedative that causes drowsiness, amnesia, slow breathing, decreased heart rate, and ketamine detox symptoms timeline medications and treatment decreased blood pressure. It is thought that when used in combination with opioids like fentanyl, it can elongate the effects of the high. Federally, government officials certainly can consider classifying xylazine as a controlled substance.
Outcomes for people with these wounds vary based on the site and size of the injury, the presence of infection and how quickly they present to the hospital for care. ”Due to the stigma of injection drug use, people may delay seeking medical care. Because of this, I suspect this problem is even more common in the community compared to what we have glimpsed in the hospital so far,” the doctors said. The doctors treated the man’s wounds and by a six-month follow-up, they had healed well, according to the NEJM article. They also initiated buprenorphine therapy to treat the patient’s opioid-use disorder.
The scans showed that psilocybin caused swift and dramatic changes to certain brain networks. Usually the neurons in a given network become active at the same time — often in tandem with other networks too. ”You’re bringing in single detox individuals many times,” Siegel says, ”and that allows you to get a very detailed and precise map of their brain networks.” As part of the study, participants’ brains were scanned an average of 18 times over a three-week period.
When investigators searched Crooks’ home, they found no artifacts that indicated a political ideology, which officials told lawmakers was unusual in a case like this. People who knew Crooks have told investigators that he didn’t often discuss politics. Senior officials from the FBI and Secret Service have briefed U.S. lawmakers on the investigation, according to a person on the call. “Obviously, the Club fully admonishes the senseless act of violence that occurred yesterday,” Bootay said in a statement while also offering condolences to the family of Corey Comperatore, who died in the attack, and prayers to those injured.
As a result, when people smoke pot, ”CBD reduces the negative effects of THC,” D’Souza said. Although synthetic cannabinoids contain THC, they don’t contain CBD, so the release of chemical messengers in the brain goes unchecked, thus creating more undesirable effects, D’Souza speculated. Users of increasingly popular street drugs called K2 or spice, which are made from mixtures of herbs laced with synthetic cannabinoids and other chemicals, are showing some incredibly strange behaviors. And although the use of regular marijuana has been linked with psychosis, or a loss of touch with reality, users of synthetic cannabinoids may have more severe psychosis reactions that involve more out-of-control behaviors than users of marijuana do, D’Souza said.
Prolonged use of xylazine-contaminated drugs can result in severe non-healing skin ulcers and infections. Reduced blood flow and poor nutrition may cause skin to appear pale, gray, or discolored. The British Columbia Interior Health authority is warning street-drug users of a synthetic cannabinoid that has been linked to a so-called ”zombie” outbreak in New York. The DEA says that the major route of xylazine into the drugs trade comes from veterinarian suppliers online, as it is legal to buy the substance for use in veterinary medicine.
The epicenter of voluntary abuse of xylazine is Kensington Street in Philadelphia, where illegal drugs are openly used. Sometimes mixed with fentanyl, xylazine – often referred to as Tranq – has spread across the US at an alarming speed and has devastated communities there. If injected, the so-called zombie drug can also cause crusty skin ulcerations near the injection site, which may eventually become dead skin called eschar and become necrotic, resulting in the need for amputation. Its presence in drug-related deaths rose from 0.3% to 6.7% between 2015 and 2020, according to a 2022 report published in Drug and Alcohol Dependence. That rate was more than 10% in Connecticut, 19% in Maryland and nearly 26% in Pennsylvania, where Sherman remade his life after years of homelessness and drug use. In the United States, xylazine is increasingly being mixed with illicit drugs such as fentanyl, doctors and study authors Jessica O’Neil and Steven Kovach at the Perelman School of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania told Newsweek.
Moreover, according to the US FDA, Routine toxicology screens do not detect Xylazine, making it really difficult to pin it as a cause in cases of drug overdose. But although its dangers may have been exaggerated, taking the drug is risky – it is addictive and can cause fatal overdoses. The latest attack and speculation, however, seem to reinforce the idea that cannibalism is symptomatic of taking drugs like bath salts or flakka. But the incident itself is isolated, and it remains unclear whether or not Harrouff was actually on flakka.
A 2017 article in the New England Journal of Medicine says the drug caused a mass intoxication of 33 people in New York City in July 2016 and was described in the media as a ”zombie” outbreak because of the appearance of those who took the drug. The new data shows it’s too late, and in May the first UK death linked to xylaxine was announced. ”The hospitals can’t keep the patients comfortable – because of their addiction – to keep them long enough to get pregabalin abuse in combination with other drugs the wounds under control,” Ronnie Kaiser told me. In March, Sky News revealed the scale of the xylazine crisis in the northeastern city of Philadelphia, where the drug cocktail first emerged, with a report that exposed the true cost of America’s evolving drug challenge. Let us know via We can ask experts for advice, and your story could be featured on Newsweek. Interestingly enough, Nelson says some data suggests xylazine has a protective factor.
